Checklist for leaving pet with petsitter

Are you leaving your pet with a sitter or neighbor while you travel? If so, you will want to leave your petsitter with the training, tools and information necessary so they can properly care for your pet. In order to properly care for your animal, the petsitter will need to know everything about your pet - food, traits, breed, history, medicines, toys, leash, vaccinations, allergies. Following is a list of questions and information to pass along to the petsitter.

  • Breed
  • Color, markings
  • Date rabies shot expires
  • Do you bring a harness, leash or collar for walks
  • Does the pet dig, chew or claw?
  • Does the pet have fears?
  • Does the pet like children?
  • Does the pet like new adults?
  • Does the pet need to be taken for a walk?
  • Does the pet obey basic commands? What commands does it know?
  • Does your dog wear proper identification with current information?
  • Does your pet have unusual habits?
  • Where is the written verification of up-to-date vaccinations
  • Favorite game or activity
  • Favorite hiding places
  • Feeding schedule, time
  • Food allergies
  • Gender of pet
  • Has the pet bitten any person or animal?
  • How to access your home – give a key, and a back up plan
  • In case of an emergency with the pet, what action should the petsitter take?
  • Is the pet allowed in the house?
  • Is the pet allowed to have treats?
  • Is the pet allowed to stay outside of the house alone?
  • Is the pet friendly to other animals?
  • Kind of food the pet likes
  • Medication – any currently taking? Schedule, name, dosage, where it is kept
  • Medicine allergies
  • Neutered or sprayed?
  • Pet’s age
  • Pet’s name
  • Phone numbers to reach you while you are gone – cell, hotel, friend
  • Photograph – leave a photo of your pet with the petsitter
  • Rabies tag number
  • Special feeding instructions
  • Where do you keep your pets favorite toys?
  • Where the collar, leash and other accessories are kept
  • Where the pet will be
  • Your expectations
  • Your first & last name
  • Your home address and phone number
  • Your travel schedule
