Choosing an assisted living facility for your loved one is an important decision. Following is a list of questions to ask when researching your options.

Is the facility safe for your loved one?

  • ADA-compliant bathrooms
  • ADA-compliant doorways
  • ADA-compliant elevators
  • emergency call buttons
  • fire and smoke alarms for the hearing impaired
  • handrails or grab bars by the toilet
  • handrails or grab bars in the bath tub
  • limited use of physical restraints
  • well-lit halls
  • well-lit stairs
  • well-marked exits

Find out the level and type of care

  • Adult day care
  • Adult foster care
  • Assisted living
  • Group homes
  • Independent living
  • In-home care
  • Nursing homes

Take a tour of the facility and look for the following:

  • Are there higher levels of care if needed later?
  • Background checks on employees?
  • Furnished, or bring furniture from home?
  • Is the facility clean?
  • Is the facility well-run?
  • Licensed?
  • Medicare certified?
  • Professional memberships?
  • Room / apartment size, layout
  • Suitable for friends and family to visit 
  • Types of activities?
  • Types of optional services?
  • What is included in the monthly rate?
  • What other charges will there be?
  • Who provides the services – in-house staff or outsourced agency

Find out what services are provided:

  • Activities – social, cultural, educational, crafts, field trips
  • Bathing assistance
  • Dressing assistance
  • Emergency medical care
  • Errand running
  • Grooming assistance
  • Housekeeping
  • Landscaping, gardening, plant care
  • Laundry
  • Meals
  • Medication administration and management
  • Religious services and worship
  • Security
  • Shopping
  • Skilled nursing care
  • Social services
  • Therapeutic care
  • Transportation
