Family reunion - attending? Tips!

Attending a family reunion? Following are some tips to help you make the most out of the reunion.

Bring with you:

  • Business cards or little pieces of paper with your name, phone number, e-mail and address to give to relatives you meet
  • Camera
  • Cash to help contribute to reunion expenses, family research, pay for auction items, pay for your reunion expenses
  • Family research, history, photos and genealogy to share with others
  • Items needed for weekend – camp chairs, food, water, potluck items, auction, activities
  • Paper & pen
  • Voice or tape recorder to record stories that are told
  • Your family or descendents contact database to give to reunion planner or family organizer

While you are there:

  • Be friendly
  • Donate money to the reunion organizer
  • Find out how you can help with the next reunion
  • Find out when the next reunion is
  • Find out who is in charge of the next reunion
  • Find similarities with your relatives
  • Give your current contact information to the reunion organizer
  • Introduce yourself to new people
  • Learn something new from each person you meet
  • Make connections
  • Pitch in and help!
  • Record stories that are told
  • Say hi to everyone you know
  • See if there is an e-mail list of living relatives. If so, add your name. If not, start one
  • Sit with someone new
  • Take digital photos of family documents or photographs that are displayed
  • Take notes on what you learn
  • Take pictures
  • Take pictures of the entire event, every table/group of people, activities and then start a photo sharing web site after the reunion, and e-mail to the family (Google Picasa has a great site – easy & free)
  • Take time to meet someone older than you are, and quietly & patiently listen to them, make eye contact, take their hand, give them a hug.
