Halloween safety at your home & neighborhood
< Back to Holidays & Occassions
Halloween is a fun holiday, and a very busy evening for homeowners and residents. Take time each fall to clean up your yard before Halloween, and make sure that your home and neighborhood is safe this year! Prepare your home and yard, so that it is safe for trick-or-treaters:
-
check for uneven stepping stones or walkway
-
clear walkways, steps and front patio of any clutter
-
do not leave burning candles unattended outside or in. Use a flashlight inside of jack-o-lanterns instead.
-
fix loose hand railings
-
fix loose steps
-
if you have a light on the front of your garage, turn it on
-
keep Halloween decorations away from walkways
-
keep pets indoors, and safely away from the front door
-
make sure light on front porch is working and on
-
move potted plants
-
put water hose away
-
rake & remove leaves on walk way, driveway and sidewalk
-
remove lawn decorations
-
sand or salt any icy spots
-
shovel snow
-
trick-or-treaters don’t always stay on walkways. Make sure yard is clear of clutter as well. Move branches, tools, toys, leaves, hose, or anything else that someone could trip or slip on.
-
trim bushes near the driveway, road and sidewalk
-
use solar-powered lights to light up walkways year-round
Remember the following tips as well to keep your neighborhood safe this Halloween:
-
drive with extra caution on Halloween night, drive slowly, be on the look out for children. Talk to teenagers about being careful.
-
Keep pets at home – all the extra activity can scare the pets
-
Look out for pets that have become loose
-
Look out for teenagers and older children who harass the younger children
- pay attention to vehicles in the neighborhood, and especially cars that seem to be hanging around, and don’t have any kids with them
