Housecleaning checklist

Do you have guests coming over, but don't know where to begin on the housecleaning? Has your house has fallen apart, but it seems overwhelming. Are you children (or spouse) ready to start helping, but need some direction. Following is a list of cleaning tasks, by room. Start with the entry way, so if a guest comes to the door, they see a clean area. Move to the kitchen, living room and other common areas. Keep the main floor bathroom shining clean. Guests will never know if your bedrooms are cluttered.

ENTRY WAY

  • Clear out all visible items that do not belong
  • Hang up coats, put away shoes
  • Put away items that do not belong, return to appropriate rooms
  • Vacuum or sweep/mop

 

KITCHEN

  • Clean dishes in sink                                          
  • Empty trash
  • Gather all dishes in house and put in sink
  • Load, run, empty dishwasher
  • Put away all papers, junk, other items that do not belong
  • Quick look in fridge for items to toss
  • Sanitize telephone
  • Scrub out sink, scrub countertops, wipe down appliances
  • Sweep & mop floors
  • Wipe down countertops

 

DINING ROOM

  • Clean glass on front of china cabinet
  • Dust furniture & centerpiece
  • Neatly put chairs back in place
  • Pick up items that do not belong & bring to rooms they go in
  • Polish and dust cabinets
  • Vacuum
  • Wash table cloth or placemats, if needed
  • Wipe down all other areas

 

FAMILY ROOM

  • Dust
  • Empty trash
  • Fluff pillows on couch or chair
  • Organize anything that visible
  • Pick up items that do not belong & bring to rooms they go in
  • Pick up toys
  • Polish wood furniture
  • Return television remotes & telephone to proper place
  • Straighten up videos, books or games on shelf
  • Vacuum floors
  • Wipe down tables & surfaces

 

LIVING ROOM

  • Dust
  • Empty trash, if any
  • Fluff pillows on couch or chairs
  • Pick up items that do not belong & bring to rooms they go in
  • Polish wood
  • Vacuum floors
  • Wipe down tables and surfaces

 

STAIRS

  • Clean walls if there are marks
  • Clear stairs of any items left there
  • Vacuum all stairs
  • Wipe down railings

HALLWAYS

  • Clean wall spots
  • Vacuum
  • Wipe down walls

 

BATHROOMS

  • Empty trash
  • Empty trash
  • Organize medicine cabinet
  • Pick up dirty clothes & take to laundry room
  • Pick up towels & hang up or put in laundry
  • Put out clean hand towels
  • Restock toilet paper
  • Scrub all areas of toilet, including on floor around
  • Scrub all visible areas
  • Scrub countertop, sink
  • Scrub shower/tub
  • Sweep & mop floor
  • Wash floor mats, toilet seat cover

 

BEDROOMS

  • Clear flat surfaces of junk that does not belong
  • Dust blinds
  • Dust furniture & television
  • Empty trash
  • Make bed
  • Pick up items on floor and put away
  • Return items to other rooms that do not belong in that bedroom
  • Sanitize telephone
  • Straighten books on bookshelf, toys on shelf, movies, stuffed animals
  • Wash sheets
